The Opportunity

Many meditation apps overwhelm users with cluttered interfaces and complex navigation, making relaxation more difficult. Thrive aimed to change that by providing a simple, calming, and intuitive experience.

My Goal

As the UX designer, I led the process from research and navigation mapping to wireframes, and also created the high-fidelity mockup in Photoshop. My goal was to make sure every visual choice supported the UX decisions and reinforced a sense of calm.

My Solution

Discovery & UX Research

We began with collaborative sessions in Canva Whiteboard to align on our vision for Thrive and define what makes an app feel calming rather than overwhelming. Together, we discussed ways to simplify the meditation experience for beginners and identify features that would encourage consistency without adding pressure.

To validate our ideas, I ran user surveys with BCIT students, analyzed competitors like Headspace and Calm, and developed a primary persona, Emily Stewart — a busy student looking for quick, stress-free sessions. This process revealed three core needs: short beginner-friendly meditations, personalized recommendations, and a clutter-free design. These insights became the foundation for the app’s navigation and overall experience.

User Flows

I meticulously mapped out intuitive and smooth navigation using Figma to ensure users could easily access features without confusion.

By analyzing user needs and behaviors, I structured the app's flow to create a seamless experience, reducing friction and enhancing engagement.

Medium Fidelity Wireframes

I designed the app layout and interactions in Figma, focusing on creating a well-structured and functional interface.

These wireframes served as the foundation for the final design, allowing me to refine the app’s structure, test usability, and ensure all elements were placed thoughtfully for an effortless user experience.

Key Features

Homepage

The homepage features personalized meditation recommendations based on user habits, preferences, and progress. It offers sessions tailored to specific goals like stress relief, focus, or better sleep.

A visual dashboard is included to track streaks, total minutes meditated, and milestone achievements, keeping users motivated and engaged. The overall design focuses on creating a calming, user-friendly experience.

Meditation Library

The meditation library includes a simple, organized layout that makes it easy to find sessions. Sessions are categorized by mood, theme, and duration, helping users quickly discover what fits their needs.

It also features a search and filtering system to make finding the right meditation even easier, all designed with a clean, intuitive layout for a seamless experience.

User Profile

The user profile allows for personalized meditation goals and session length preferences. Users can choose background sounds to enhance relaxation, adjust notification settings, and track their progress.

It also provides easy access to saved or favorited sessions, all designed to encourage consistency and long-term engagement.

Process & Timeline

I worked primarily on the research and design phases, running surveys, analyzing competitor apps, mapping user flows in Figma, and creating medium-fidelity wireframes. I also produced a single high-fidelity concept mockup in Photoshop to explore the visual direction. Over the course of the project, I logged 8 hours and collaborated with the team through regular meetings and shared whiteboard sessions.

Final Prototype

The final Thrive prototype offers a calm, focused experience with soft colors, clean typography, and smooth transitions. Simple three-tab navigation makes sessions quick to start, while personalized recommendations and progress tracking encourage consistency. Built in Figma, the clickable prototype lets viewers explore the full journey from onboarding to tracking progress.

Reflection

Working on Thrive reminded me of the power of simplicity in user experience. I learned how to prioritize calm and clarity without stripping away functionality.

If I were to take this further, I’d love to add an
AI-driven meditation assistant because AI is a major trend right now and will only keep growing.

This assistant could guide users in real time, simplify their journey, and make the experience more personal and supportive.
